Nadia Arnold Gallery Lausanne Art Fair Switzerland 2018

Nadia Arnold Gallery Lausanne Art Fair Switzerland 2018

2 minute read

Nadia Arnold Gallery at Lausanne Art fair in Switzerland 2018. This was one of my very first art fairs back in early 2018 in Switzerland where I exhibited two artists; Adam Riches and Felix Dolah
I thought this would be a good fair to participate in. I am originally from Villars, a little ski resort in the Swiss Alps, just a half an hour drive from the charming city of Lausanne where this art fair took place. This meant I could visit my family and friends and cheekily ask them to give me a hand to set up and take down the exhibited artworks. I could also stay with my best friend in Lausanne meaning I would save a considerable amount of money on a hotel.
I drove from London to Switzerland with my little rental van. I was still learning and not well prepared... Pre-Brexit it was an easy task to drive from the UK into France. It was a different story entering Switzerland on the french-swiss boarder. I wasn't let into the country and had to spend a night in a hotel. I knew I had to have my export papers into order before leaving but I had underestimated the paperwork and time it would take to do so. Needing an EORI number for temporary import and getting everything approved... but I had already paid for the fair and so I decided to go ahead and try my luck. I naively hoped that my Swiss passport and a big smile would be enough to get me and my eighty artworks through but the Swiss are square and tough.
I spent the night at the hotel and went to the boarder's customs office first thing the next morning and paid the vat for artworks. I could get a refund for the vat on all unsold works on my way back to the UK after the fair. It just meant that I had to stop at the border and visit the customs office again (loosing over an hour on my driving journey 😩).
The moral of this story is don't mess with the Swiss border guards. They are super square and won't even crack a little smile on a friendly/small-talk joke. 😅
